Commercial concrete layer to Christmas installer… How did it happen?

Some people must wonder how a commercial construction worker can end up working for a Christmas company. Well, as different as these industries might seem there are some similarities.

About six years ago I was working as a commercial concrete layer. The actual work I was doing was very Seasonal; busy in the summer months, but less so during the winter- as it was very weather dependant. Which is how I first found out about Fizzco. A friend suggested I get in contact with a firm from Skipton about working through the Christmas period on Christmas decorations. I was a bit apprehensive about this, as I first thought there cannot be much work in putting up Christmas decorations, how wrong could I be!

That first season in 2013 opened my eyes to the madness and hard work that is involved with installing an industrial sized Christmas decoration and I loved it. A year later the company I was originally working for was obtained by Fizzco and the real journey began. In a passing conversation with Russell (operations director) on a shopping centre mall at about 2am in the morning, I mentioned that I had had enough of the construction industry and was looking for something else.

Fast forward three months and a permanent job offer for all year round was on the table. I jumped at the chance not really knowing what was ahead of me. I moved over 90 miles from Yorkshire to Lincolnshire and I am now in my third year of permanent all year-round Christmas, and it is probably the biggest and best decision I have made. The one thing that does annoy me, is when I tell people what I do for a living, they always ask…what do you do the rest of the year?? If only they knew…
